BP Big Screens celebrates its 25th anniversary this summer with a new reach.

The Royal Opera House will stream live broadcasts of La Traviata, La Bohème and Rigoletto to the World Wide Web for the first time, together with 18 pop-up relay hubs across the country.

Midas is working with Dobson Sound and screen specialist Mediatec to deliver the event in Trafalgar Square, which continues to serve as an introduction to opera for some and a reaffirmation for others.

“There’s the appeal of an event in the open air and we’ve been very lucky with the weather over the years,” Sara Maxted, Production Manager for the Royal Opera House, said. “It means a lot of passing trade as well as people who bring a picnic and watch it all.

“We have worked with Midas for a long time and rely on them more and more as the footprint of the event grows,” she added. “Our remit has long been to be as green as we can and Midas is a company that puts a bold tick in that box too.”

Alex Beard, Chief Executive of The Royal Opera House, said: “As we look forward to another brilliant summer of free, world-class productions on the big screen, it’s a fitting time to congratulate BP for its 25-years’ support of the Royal Opera House and what better way to celebrate the anniversary than to share La Traviata to a global audience online for free.”

La Traviata, on 20 May, is followed by La Bohème on 15 July and Rigoletto on 17 September. All three productions are broadcast live from the Covent Garden stage and to 18 towns and cities across the UK.
