Hybrid Battery Hire
Cleaner, Quieter Temporary Power
Not every power requirement requires a diesel generator to run continuously. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), when paired with a diesel generator, can dramatically reduce fuel consumption, lower noise levels, and lower the carbon footprint of your temporary power installation.
Midas stocks hybrid battery units from three manufacturers, covering a range of output sizes and operating profiles. Whether you need silent power for a noise-restricted event site, reduced running hours on a construction project, or cleaner energy credentials for a sustainability-conscious client, we can put together the right solution.
Our Hybrid Battery Fleet
JCB Battery Energy Storage
The JCB battery range is built around lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry, chosen for its safety, cycle life and performance in demanding site conditions. Available in two sizes:
- JCB 3.50 QE - 50kWh usable capacity, suitable for event and site welfare applications
- JCB 3.75 QE - 75kWh usable capacity, extended operating time between charges
Both units are designed to work alongside any generator in a hybrid configuration; the generator charges the battery bank as the battery handles the base load, and any peaks above the battery’s capability are handled automatically by the generator.
This system enables the generator to shut down when not required, resulting in substantial fuel and emissions savings.
Power Saving Solutions
- 30kW / 45kVA - a versatile mid-range battery unit suited to event power applications, and small to medium site compounds and welfare facilities
Pramac Battery Storage
- Pramac LX 45 / 90 — 90kVA output, larger capacity for sustained off-grid or hybrid operation. Specification sheets for all units are available on request.
How Hybrid Power Works
In a typical hybrid configuration, a diesel generator and a battery storage unit work together. The generator runs when needed, charging the battery and supplying peak loads, and shuts down when the battery can carry the load alone. The result is:
- Significantly reduced generator running hours - less fuel, less wear, less noise
- Near-silent operation during battery discharge periods - essential for noise-restricted sites
- Lower fuel consumption - typically 50–80% reduction versus diesel-only operation in suitable applications
- Reduced carbon emissions - measurable for ESG and sustainability reporting
- Seamless load transfer - no interruption to supply when switching between generator and battery
Combined Hire Packages
All our battery units are available as standalone hire or combined with a diesel generator from our main hire fleet. We will design the right configuration for your load profile and site requirements, including cable and distribution equipment if needed.
When to Consider Hybrid Power
Hybrid and battery solutions are not right for every application; they work best where load profiles allow the generator to run intermittently rather than continuously.
They are particularly well-suited to:
- Events and festivals - noise restrictions, silent periods overnight, sustainability commitments
- Urban construction sites - noise reduction requirements, Clean Air Zone considerations
- Agricultural applications - reduced overnight fuel consumption on seasonal equipment
- Film and TV productions - silent power for recording environments
- Welfare and accommodation units - intermittent load profiles suit battery operation
For high, continuous loads, such as large industrial processes, pumping, or welding, a standard diesel generator may remain the most practical solution. We will always give you an honest assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will a battery unit run without recharging?
This depends on the unit size and your load. A JCB 3.50 QE powering a 20kW continuous total load will deliver approximately 2–3 hours of standalone operation before the diesel generator needs to run and recharge it. In typical hybrid use, where the generator runs periodically, the battery provides effectively continuous power. We will model this for your specific load when you enquire.
Can a battery unit power my whole site?
For most event and construction site applications, the battery is used as part of a hybrid system rather than as the sole power source. It handles peak demand, reduces generator running time, and provides silent power during low-demand periods. Fully off-grid battery-only operation is possible for small loads and short durations. Speak to us about your requirements.
Do hybrid solutions cost more to hire?
Combined hire of a battery unit and a generator will cost more than generator-only hire.
However, the fuel savings on longer hires often offset or exceed the additional hire costs. We can provide a cost comparison for your specific application.
