Hull UK City of Culture 2017 got off to a spectacular start with a firework display on the waterfront welcoming in the New Year one of a weight of highlights across six sites.
Zsolt Balogh’s film, We Are Hull, was the centre point. Stunning animations and archive footage projected onto City Hall, Ferens Art Gallery and Maritime Museum in Victoria Square, weaving the story of the city together and culminating in the single, straight ahead statement ‘We are Hull’ to cheers from the crowd.
“We Are Hull ran for the first six days of the New Year,” Production Manager, KP, said. “It was a quick get in, Midas powering a lot of very sensitive equipment, and it ran beautifully. The job, across the all the sites, was about working in public places, nothing like providing for a private event,” he added.
For Midas, that meant siting generators discretely in unlikely locations on both sides of the river. KP, who hadn’t worked with the company before, said its input was fantastic, “pitching in ideas, responding to changes in the brief and delivering on all its promises”.
